CHALLENGE

The property owners of the White Sands La Jolla luxury retirement community were looking for a way to use the abundant San Diego sunshine to help lower operating costs of their beachside luxury living facility. As utility electricity rates were climbing, the San Diego business was looking for a way to gain control over their energy expenses as well as reduce their energy costs overall. 

SOLUTION

HES Renewables designed a 456-kilowatt commercial solar system that spans eight roof facets of the multi-building retirement complex. Silfab 490-watt solar panels were selected for their high performance, strong warranty, and great value. The rooftop solar arrays combine to produce an estimated 668,163 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

The luxury living property now benefits from an estimated $4,268,848 total savings in electrical bills over the first 25 years of operation. The energy produced on-site also protects the business from being completely dependent on electrical grid-delivered power. With a short payback period of 4.8 years the solar system will pay for itself quickly, thanks in part to the strong federal and state solar incentives available for installing commercial solar systems in California. 

The beachfront retirement community residents gain the enjoyment of powering their lives using clean, green energy. Just as they can appreciate the clean ocean air, they can take an equal satisfaction in the knowledge that their homes deliver solar energy on-site for their electricity use.

Robert Laverty joined the HES team in the summer of 2018, bringing his ten years of solar design experience and his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Puget Sound with him. Robert is dedicated to finding solutions to help families produce and store electricity in order to reduce their reliance on grid power as well as help reduce their household’s carbon footprint. Robert’s experience as a newspaper editor as well as his involvement with the sustainability-focused Rocky Mountain Institute drives him to constantly seek out innovative ways to meet energy needs through renewable resources as well as helps him share those ideas with Southern California homeowners. When not at work or volunteering time with his church or community, Robert spends time with his wife and two sons or pursues his passion of fly fishing.
