QuidelOrtho wanted to apply its ambitious global sustainability goals to its Carlsbad, California facility. In addition to energy use efficiencies, the San Diego BioMed company was looking toward a commercial solar project to allow the location to operate on more renewable energy.
Quidel’s BioMed facilities require a lot of electricity to achieve their mission to “enhance healthcare accessibility through affordable diagnostic solutions.” The challenge of creating and manufacturing medical tests, such as one of the COVID-19 tests relied on in the United States, usually means high energy use and with that comes high energy costs.
Quidel engaged HES Renewables to design a commercial rooftop solar system for its Carlsbad facility that would reduce the operation costs of the California location. The solar system also helps the corporation’s overall sustainability goals that include waste reduction as well as increased energy efficiencies.
The PV solar designers at HES Renewables created phase one of the renewable energy system; this rooftop solar system was installed by the HES Renewables crew and provides strong energy cost savings with a short payback period of 4.2 years. Additionally, the solar system delivers the benefit of providing electricity produced on-site for the facility’s use – this elimination of energy transmission fits perfectly with Quidel’s efficiency tenet.
This initial solution proved successful and Quidel has engaged HES Renewables to expand the rooftop solar panel arrays and add an energy storage system (ESS aka commercial battery) at the facility.
The solar system installed as Phase 1 is already producing an estimated 187,887 kilowatt hours annually and is on-track to save the Carlsbad location an estimated $1,168,857 on electric bills over the first 25 years.
Quidel’s initial investment in the HES Renewables energy systems is greatly reduced thanks to the incentives provided by the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), Federal Bonus Depreciation, and State MACRS Depreciation programs. The solar + energy system will help power Quidel’s mission toward healthier people, a healthier planet, and even a healthier bottom line for the BioMed company.

“…we have embraced solar energy at one of our California facilities, supporting our intent to increase reliance on renewable sources…“
