Harland Brewing Co.: Top Beer Brewed with Rooftop Commercial Solar

Commercial Case Study

Harland Brewing Co.
Scripps Ranch, CA

Challenge

San Diego is a ‘gold rush’ town for great, craft beers (and hard seltzers). Harland Brewing Co. was established in 2019 with one brewing location. The brewery now has four tasting room locations (including one at their Scripps Ranch brewing location). The brewing process and hospitality locations require a large amount of energy and the large rooftop of the Scripps Ranch location was going underutilized.

Solution

HES Renewables was engaged to design a solar system for the Scripps Ranch brewery and tasting room. The solution was a 560–panel rooftop commercial solar system using SunPower SPR-A400-COM panels feeding DC electricity to 4 SMA CORE1 inverters. The annual output of the system is estimated to be 364,778 kilowatt hours and was designed to offset current and future energy needs at that location.

Customer Benefit

Through solar electricity production and Ivy Energy tenant billing software, building-owner HG Fenton added a previously-untapped revenue stream to the Scripps Ranch property. The system is currently powering its way to a short 4 year payback period. The HES Renewables project lowered the initial investment cost through the various incentives to California commercial solar projects, including the Federal Investment Tax Credit, the Federal Bonus Depreciation (100%) and the State MACRS Depreciation incentive.

Underneath that power-producing roof, Harland Brewing Co. seized the opportunity to use San Diego sunshine to power its beer production. Additionally, Harland pays less for the electricity delivered from the solar system; this lowers its bottom line, helps to grow the San Diego brewer, and potentially opens more tasting room locations in the future.

HES Renewables hosted an employee event in April of 2023 and a professional mixer in February of 2024 at the Harland Brewing Co. brewery & tasting room in Scripps Ranch. Our employees and guests loved the quality of Harland’s beers and the setting was excellent!

“We wanted Harland to be just local to San Diego; having as many tasting rooms around the county is what we’re going for. It’s nice to just be focused on where we live. Our sole focus is San Diego.”

Josh Landan, co-founder of Harland Brewing Co., in a 2019 story in the Carmel Valley News
