The energy consumption of a beautiful community recreation center with three pools was creating high electricity bills. Pool pumps and filtration systems traditionally require high amounts of energy, especially in the summer months and for community-use pools. With San Diego utility-provided electricity increasing at an estimated 4% annually, the energy costs were requiring more operating budget each year. The organization sought a way to ideally lower, but at least stabilize, energy costs for the focal point of the luxury community.
Taking advantage of a natural hillside, HES Renewables constructed a commercial ground mount solar system. The 97-kilowatt system produces an estimated 175,235 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
The community’s common area energy costs were reduced and stabilized. Each resident indirectly benefited through the lowered operating costs of the shared facilities.
During the early years of this system’s operation, the utility (SDG&E) power rate increases wildly outpaced the industry-predicted 4% increase: the rates doubled over the five year period from 2019-2024. The commercial solar system provided insulation from that exorbitant rate increase and avoided budget adjustments or additional resident fee increases.
For Sudberry Properties, the owner of the system, the investment provides a significant, long-term financial win. The low-maintenance requirements of commercial solar means minimal service costs and minimal equipment costs over the 25+ year period of revenue-generation.
