CHALLENGE

With a new construction multi-family unit being built in the Linda Vista area of San Diego, the property owners wanted to maximize the return on their investment. They looked into on-site solar energy production and looked at the efficiencies gained by incorporating solar design and installation into the initial project build. 

SOLUTION

HES Renewables was engaged to design a solar system for the apartment complex that could be installed during the initial phase of construction. Two solar system types were determined to be the optimal use of the available roof space of the building and the parking area. This solar design would provide an estimated annual production of 227,582 kilowatt hours while also bringing the added benefits of covered parking areas for the tenants. 

HES Renewables incorporated Ivy Energy’s energy share billing system to optimize the location’s return on investment by adding the additional revenue stream of selling renewable energy to tenants.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

The property owners were able to begin the new apartment building with the added revenue stream of electricity sales to tenants in place. The rooftop and carport solar systems are expected to deliver an estimated $1,518,570 over the first 25 years of operation. Additionally, with more Californians looking to lower their carbon footprint and use more renewable energy, the on-site solar helps with both tenant attraction and retention. 

The San Diego solar system also delivers renewable energy benefits directly to tenants; the system is arranged to bring energy cost savings with every electric bill to every unit at the property.
