Carlsbad Corporate Center: Commercial Solar Systems That Share Energy Savings Between Buildings

Commercial Case Study

Carlsbad Corporate Center - carlsbad, CA

With various tenants throughout the four buildings that make up the Carlsbad Corporate Center in Sunny San Diego, building owner HG Fenton wanted to find the best way to offer renewable energy to each current and future tenant.

HES Renewables designed four commercial solar systems to maximize the rooftop areas of the four buildings. A total of 1456 SunPower 400-watt panels were employed to create a 344.08 kw solar system, a 177.76 kw solar system, a 58.96 kw solar system, and a 58.84 kw solar system.

The overall design of the separate solar systems incorporated Ivy Energy billing software. The software was set up to interconnect the four separate solar systems into one pool of clean, renewable energy available to all tenants, in any of the buildings.

HG Fenton was able to offer each tenant the option to power their company with the renewable energy produced from the four solar systems. Tenants signed up for the dual benefit of running their business on green energy produced on-site, and also for the built-in savings over the price of grid energy at the time of use.

The tenants now use and share a total estimated annual output of 922,209 kWh of solar energy. HG Fenton opened up a new revenue stream for the business center and made each unit more desirable to retain current tenants. The option of solar energy, at a cost lower than grid energy, makes any future vacant units more desirable to companies looking to operate their business with renewable energy.
