The San Diego brewing facility housed industrial size brewery equipment, refrigerated storage, as well as a first-class on-site restaurant. The property owners wanted a way to add a revenue stream as well as increase the appeal to the building’s tenants.
With two large, flat rooftops above the brewery and restaurant, it made perfect sense to build solar energy for the brewery. HES Renewables, in its long-standing partnership with the real estate company H.G. Fenton, designed then installed an impressive solar system that stretches across both rooftops. The designers specified SunPower A430 panels in a Helix dual-tilt arrangement. The panels feed DC power into SMA Core 1 480V inverters to provide enough renewable energy to offset the tenant’s utility energy use by 69%.
With solar producing electricity overhead, energy costs were lowered for producing beverages and operating the gastropub below. During the design and installation process, the then-current tenant, Ballast Point, moved out. Without missing a beat, another major brewing company took over tenancy and got right to work converting the facility to their needs. The facility offered the space and equipment needed for the expanding brewery, and thanks to the commercial solar system the energy costs had a built-in discount.
H.G. Fenton benefited by having this energy cost savings built into the space, which made it much more attractive. Additionally, many customers of all products and services are on the lookout for companies with sustainable practices, and brewing with the power of the sun adds an attractive splash to the current tenant’s production process.
From the building owner’s perspective, the solar powered brewery quickly found a new tenant, and the property’s net operating income increased thanks to the additional revenue stream created by selling solar power to the tenant.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to bring energy cost savings and increased operations cost predictability to more and more businesses. As utility rates climb, solar’s overall value only increases. The payback period on a commercial solar system is impressively quick, allowing solar projects to provide a strong Return on Investment and then continue to deliver tremendous cost savings for decades. A commercial solar system is one of the best investments a company can make.”
