AVID: Knowledge is Powered by the Sun

Commercial Case Study

AVID- Kearny Mesa, CA

CHALLENGE

The four-story office building that houses AVID’s San Diego headquarters was looking to lower and stabilize energy costs. The rooftop area available for solar would allow for a large system, but AVID was looking to maximize its renewable energy production at the property. Additionally, AVID wanted to provide EV (Electric Vehicle) charging stations to employees and guests, including access to EV charging at the handicap-designated parking spaces.

SOLUTION

HES Renewables designed an array composed of 277 Maxeon-produced, 450-watt solar panels to create a 124.65-kilowatt commercial rooftop solar system. Looking for more green energy production, solar carports were constructed; they brought the added benefit of shade to employees and visitors. The solar carport structures were designed to hold 615 470-watt solar panels up toward the sun to create an additional 289.05 kilowatts of production capacity.

The project included EV charging station installation to benefit the increasing use of EVs. Four SemaConnect dual pedestal stations were installed on the eastern edge of the main building. A fifth SemaConnect charging station was installed under the central carport, positioned to allow EV charging from the ADA-compliant car and van parking spots.

CUSTOMER BENEFIT

The property now provides shaded parking as it powers the facility. With a total estimated annual production of 628,389 kWh, the commercial solar system can offset 84.2% of utility power use. 892 total panels turn San Diego sunshine into an estimated $5,983,819 in electric bill savings over 25 years.

Employee attraction and retention got a boost with the addition of EV charging stations to handle current needs as well as future needs as Electric Vehicle adoption increases.

As AVID empowers educators to stay in step with the best developing educational techniques, the AVID campus has remained in step with today’s increasing desire to operate in a sustainable fashion through renewable energy use. Aligned now through this solar partnership, both HES Renewables and AVID are looking ahead toward a brighter future for the next generation.
